Duluth Mayor Herb "Captain Kangaroo Kommunist" Bergson Takes Office

Bergson's key initiatives

• Appoint a committee to replace the director of planning and development.

• Put free wireless Internet connections downtown. [Yes, and who is going to pay for this?]

• Expand campground at Spirit Mountain. [The one that nobody uses?]

• Appoint an American Indian to the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area Authority board. [To prevent a golf course from ever being developed there?]

• Revive the Crimestoppers program to reduce crime.

• Allow residents to report minor crimes online.

• Designate a police officer to handle financial crimes, such as identity theft. [Isn't this best left to the FBI?]

• Create an endowment to pay for cultural, educational and recreational activities for youth.

• Include Iron Range cities in Duluth Days, the annual lobbying effort in St. Paul.

• Look at relocating the Enger Park Golf Course's clubhouse to attract nongolfers for a glimpse of the breathtaking view. [And thus making it less convenient for golfers?]

• Find a way to fund a covered water park. [What the #@*%!!!]

• Appoint Councilor Russ Stewart and real estate agent Ken Truscott to lead a committee to review processes of the Building Inspection Department.

• Create a committee to review environmentally friendly industrial development opportunities. [Only review environmentally friendly opportunities? Who decides that criteria?]

• Pursue grants to employ senior citizens to oversee a community service program. [I thought jobs were supposed to make money, not drain money...]

• Work toward building a new animal shelter.

• Help reopen the NorShor Theatre, which closed in mid-October.
